Planning a Family-Friendly Fishing Charter in Hawaii — Part 2

Deep sea fishing can be a fantastic family activity, but a few planning choices make the difference between a trip the kids beg to repeat and one that ends early. Here’s what we recommend for families.

Choose a Shared or Half-Day Trip First

If it’s your family’s first time offshore, a shared charter or a half-day trip is a low-pressure way to test the waters — literally. Shorter trips mean less time exposed to sun and swell while still giving everyone a real shot at a fish.

Check the Age Guidelines

Each of our charters lists a minimum age, since younger children can struggle with the motion and sun exposure of a full day offshore. If you’re planning around younger kids, ask us about the calmest boats and the mildest-condition islands.

Pack for Comfort, Not Just Fishing

Bring extra layers, snacks, and entertainment for any downtime between bites. A reef-safe sunscreen reapplied every couple of hours goes a long way toward keeping everyone happy for the whole trip.

Private charters are also a great family option — you set the pace, the crew tailors the day to your kids’ attention spans, and there’s no need to share rods with strangers.
