Hawaii’s warm waters mean there’s no true “off season” for deep sea fishing, but certain months bring certain species closer to shore on each island. Here’s a quick guide to help you time your trip.
Oahu
Summer (June through September) is prime time for blue marlin off Oahu’s south shore, while mahi-mahi and ono run strong in the spring. Winter swells can make for a livelier ride, so shared charters tend to be calmer picks December through February.
Maui
Spring and early summer bring some of the best mahi-mahi and ono action around Maui, and the calmer summer waters make it a great choice for families and first-timers.
Kona (Island of Hawaii)
Kona is famous for big blue marlin nearly year-round, with the heaviest fish typically showing up July through September during the Kona marlin season. It’s the island most serious anglers ask for by name.
Kauai
Kauai’s waters are excellent for ahi (yellowfin tuna) in the summer months, with generally calmer conditions than the other islands, making it a comfortable option for anglers who want a smoother ride.
